Want to see the incredible lava caves of Reykjanes peninsula? Or the awe inspiring geothermal hot spring fields? Reykjanes peninsula is a breathtaking place, especially if you are a geology enthusiast.
For the lava cave Iceland tour & Reykjanes peninsula there is pickup at hotel we drive in the direction of Reykjanes. First we stop at the Bridge between continents. Here the continental divide is obvious and you can walk from America to Europe by crossing a bridge. We then stop at Gunnuhver, a highly active geothermal area of mud pools and steam vents, named after an angry female ghost whose spirit was trapped in the hot springs.
Just below Gunnuhver is the area where the first lighthouse in Iceland was built. He has fallen into the ocean and a new lighthouse is standing at the coast. The Coastline below is beautiful with basalt rocks and the powerfull waves splashing on the ocean cliffs. Next up is a short stop to see Brimketill. This is where the Trolls used to take a bath in the ocean. Here the waves are very big and sometimes people get a splash from the ocean as the waves hit the rocks.
We have lunch at the harbor in Grindavik in a cute local restaurant. Krýsuvíkurbjarg is one of the biggest bird cliffs in Iceland. We off road our way to the best location for viewing this place. In the right conditions we can off road all the way to a remote lighthouse located on the end of a huge ocean cliff. If you like hiking then we will add a short hike to an old Volcano crater with great views over the area.
Seltún a geothermal area of great beauty is worth a quick stop before reaching Kleifarvatn, the largest lake on the peninsula. Kleifarvatn is a volcanic lake 100% fed by spring water and is there for very clear. Our super jeep allows us to drive all the way to the lake to a nice quiet place.
Spelunking in a lava cave
Next up is Caving, the Lava cave Leiðarendi is about 900 meters long and in there is about 150 meter walk towards it. The cave lies, in fact, in a circle is pitch black without light but you will get a helmet and head light so you will easily see the wonders that the cave has to offer. You will see magnificent lava formations such as stalactites and drip stalagmites and have an underground adventure. You might need to hunch and crawl a bit but, all in all the cave gives an easy access to the underworld of the Icelandic lava fields. Bathing in the Blue Lagoon can be added on the tour on request
