Snæfellsnes is a peninsula of great diversity. In fact, of all the peninsulas in Iceland, Snæfellsnes is most likely the most diverse. During Summer first stop of the day is Gerduberg basalt rocks an impressive wall of beautiful basalt columns, forming geometric patterns in the cliffs. From there we drive further into the mountains and end up doing a short hike through a lava field to find a surprise at the end of the path.
After this refreshing walk we drive over the mountains to the other side of the peninsula, Of course we stop to enjoy the view on the way and possibly walk to a small hidden waterfall. For lunch we stop in at a cute local restaurant in Olafsvik. After lunch we drive a short way to Kirkjufell Mountain, likely the most photographed Mountain in Iceland and has been used at least 2 times as a backround in the Game of Thrones.
We continue our way passing through the fishing towns of Hellissandur and Rif before arriving in the national park of Snæfellsnes. The national park of Snæfellsnes has many great locations we explore them most of them including Svörtuloft lighthouse, a yellow beach and dramatic ocean cliffs.
We continue our trip to Djupalonssandur black sand beach one of Icelands most beautiful beaches. Next up is Lóndrangar basalt cliffs a uniquely formed remnants of basalt volcanic dikes. Here we walk up a hill to get the best possible picture of the strange formation. We stop at Arnarstapi where we see Gatklettur „Arch rock“ a rock the waves have eroded and formed. If weather allows we can drive up to Snæfellsjökull Glacier and enjoy the great view over the peninsula. Snæfellsjökull was featured in one of the great works of classic sci-fi literature: Journey to the Center of the Earth by Jules Verne. We have the option of hiking into Rauðfellsgjá a beautiful canyon between 2 mountains with a waterfall at the end (the hike can only be done in summer). How much we can do on this day depends on each group, we don’t have to do everything. We can also pick the best parts and have it a bit more relaxed. This is a small group tour max 6 people so we can tailor every tour after what you want to do.
