Major attractions in West Iceland
There are many great attractions in West Iceland, though only a few might be called a major attraction. Here’s a list of attractions that we fully recommend that you visit while in West Iceland.
Borgarnes
Borgarnes is a small town in West Iceland. The town is situated where the viking Egill Skallagrimsson grew up, which is the main character of Egils saga. There you will find a superb museum about the viking era in Iceland.
Reykholt
We Icelanders are very proud of our sagas, the medieval literature which not only Iceland uses as a major source of history. Snorri Sturluson was a prolific writer in the middle ages and wrote among other important books a key to understanding the viking poetry and the old Norse religion.
Snorri lived in Reykholt and there you can find his personal pool and a great museum dedicated to his work.
Krauma
Deildartunguhver hot spring is the most powerful hot spring in Europe. Witnessing the raw natural power is breathtaking, to say the least.
At the hot spring is a great spa called Krauma. We fully recommend that you stop there and take the time to relax and enjoy the view from the jacuzzis.
Hraunfossar
Hraunfossar, or Lava falls, are an incredible natural attraction, where you will see a beautiful waterfall fall from underneath a lava field. A river disappears beneath the lava field hundreds of meters away from where the waterfalls are.
The waterfalls fall in Hvita river, and not far from the Hraunfossar waterfalls is another waterfall called Barnafossar or Children waterfalls. As the story goes, there was once a natural stone bridge over the river by the waterfall. When two children fell into the waterfalls centuries ago their mother, a rich widow, had the stone bridge destroyed.
The waterfalls are one of the most popular attraction in Iceland.
Húsafell and glacial exploration
Husafell area is a favorite among locals. Thousands of Icelanders pay the area a visit every year, either to go camping or to stay in a summer cottage. There’s a small pool there and a great hotel with a superb restaurant.
You can book a tour on a super truck to visit Langjokull glacier. On the tour you can explore a long glacial cave, and see what the glacier is like from below.
